Rio Milagro Foundation wants to be clear and transparent in the work that we do. Since the inception of The Navajo Sheep Project and the Navajo-Churro Association in the early 1980s, The name Navajo-Churro was adopted with good intention by these organizations and used as the churro sheep official name. The names, “Navajo Churro” and the “Original” or “Old Type Churro”, and “Churro sheep” are titles representing the same landrace sheep. It is our intention to use the name “Old Type Churro”, a title derived from elder Navajos in the 1970s, or “Churro sheep”, a title used by Navajo, Hispanic, Pueblo, and Tarahumara cultures, in order to properly acknowledge historical groups that were instrumental in the Churro sheep’s rich history and development in the SW. These cultural groups we are recognizing are the Navajo and nineteen Pueblo cultures in both New Mexico and the Colorado Plateau, Spanish along the Rio Grande and Jornado Plateau, and the Tarahumara and Mayan cultures in the Sierra Madres of Mexico, and anglo shepherds that are involved in holding the genetics.
